The Big Woody Rides is a fun and challenging annual mountain bike race held in Flagstaff's scenic Fort Tuthill County Park. Participants can choose from a 13.5 mile single loop, a 27-mile double loop, or a 6-hour endurance race (solo or duo). The Big Woody Rides also proudly includes an Adaptive Mountain Bike (aMTB) race. This category provides an inclusive opportunity for riders using adaptive cycles to participate in the event. The aMTB race typically follows a modified version of the main course, carefully selected to be challenging yet accessible for adaptive equipment. The course winds through beautiful pine forests, utilizing a mix of smooth and flowing singletrack like the Highland Trail, connecting forest service roads for climbs, and the more technical Rogers and Soldier Trails for descents back to the park.

Expect an intermediate-level course with a good balance of climbing and descending, perfect for both seasoned racers and enthusiastic riders looking for a great day on the trails.

The Big Woody Rides also proudly includes an Adaptive Mountain Bike (aMTB) race. This category provides an inclusive opportunity for riders using adaptive cycles to participate in the event. The aMTB race typically follows a modified version of the main course, carefully selected to be challenging yet accessible for adaptive equipment. This demonstrates the event's commitment to inclusivity and allows a wider range of riders to experience the thrill and camaraderie of the Big Woody Rides on the beautiful Flagstaff trails. Specific details regarding the aMTB course length and any specific rules or support provided for adaptive riders are usually available on the official Aravaipa Rides website closer to the event date.

Additional Info

We will have our MedStar Solutions medical staff based at the start / finish headquarters to assist with first aid onsite. We reserve the right to pull you from the race if medical officials deem it necessary.
NOTE: Please do NOT call 911 in a medical emergency. Our medical team is highly trained and understands the terrain and driving access points. Please call the race day number and they will dispatch immediately.

The race courses will be well marked with orange plastic ribbons with black polka dots and reflective medallions. Trail junctions and turns will be well marked with reflective laminated signs. In addition, blue & white checkerboard plastic flagging and RED reflective WRONG WAY signs will be hung to designate non-race or “WRONG WAY” trails. All riders are responsible for understanding the layout of the course. Please familiarize yourself with the course maps on our website prior to race day and/or print a map to bring along with you.

Parking
Parking will be available in the bike park and adjacent lots. Carpool to save!

Timing
All races will be professionally chip timed with a disposable timing chip attached to your bike bib. Please attach to your handlebars on the front of your bike. Live results will be available during the event at Aravaipa Live.

Duo Teams
We will offer a duo team option for the 6 Hour race. 6 Hour Team participants are comprised of two riders on a single team who complete laps one at a time for their team. You decide who rides which laps and how many. Riders may elect to ride more than one loop in a row, but switching between riders may be done only in the transition zone at the start/finish area.

Camping
Dispersed tent camping is allowed by Fort Tuthill County Park for this event just north of the Start/Finish area, a 2-minute walk. Fort Tuthill Campground is open for camping for a fee. Contact them, 928-286-7060 or email forttuthillcampground@vista-rec.com

Mountain Biking and Trash
Please respect the trails and the beauty of the desert by disposing of any trash at one of our aid stations. We do recycle and participate in the Terracycle program where we recycle used nutrition packets and gel wrappers. Please deposit them in the specified container at the feed station.

Trail Etiquette
Remember to always remain on designed trails, no short cutting.
Headphones are not permitted. No E- Bikes.

This course includes some legit single track. If you are fast and attempting to pass, please alert the rider in front of you before flying past them. Likewise, if you hear a rider approaching you from behind, attempt to find a spot to allow the pass once it is safe to do so.

As a general rule, when passing a rider, announce, “on your left.” Remain in control and respect the other participants.
Everyone is after the same goal here so let’s be respectful of each other’s races and have fun.

Pets
For the safety of all individuals, no pets are allowed on-course at the night races. Any pets at the race must be on a leash at all times, respect park rules, and be supervised.
